Every year Bob Lynch gives advice on pacing at the start of the race. The race is one of the few in which I have worn my GPS as I did last year.

This year despite running 'flat out' on the descent I was in fact running little faster and sometimes more slowly than for the first mile when trying to hold myself back, and in the company of many who finish a long way behind (plus others ahead who fail on the hill)

Furthermore this year I had decided in advance to start really trying after a mile - last year I was recovering from a cold and was very cautious for two miles. (I've also had a disappointing summer) The result: I did the first three or four miles about a minute faster than last year but the last three miles several seconds slower... and was a tad tired at the end.

So: Two obvious points - (i) Bob is right (ii) It helps to be in good shape

Thirdly, and counter intuitively, this is a course where some practice at fast, flat 800s, 1500s and 5Ks wouldn't do you any harm.

Hello,

Not a comment re the Langley 7(although its one of my faves!) but more a general query re possibly joining Wilmslow RC. I've not been a running club member before but I've seen enough of your vests fly past me in local races to make me think it might be a good idea. I'm not sure of my mile pace but did the Wilmslow Half in approx 1hr 40m and my average Bramhall Parkrun is 23m30s. Please can you let me know whats the best way for a newbie like me to come along and try out a training night?

Thanks
