Park Run Saturday 27th December

A Wilmslow 0ne / Two this weekend .

The legendary double act , Fowler and McGaff took first and second place this weekend .

Malcolm won in 17.32 with the Club Peter Pan , not far behind in 17.46. Malcolm was even spotted having a quick glimpse over his shoulder with some 600 metres remaining .

Times were a touch down this week as ice hit parts of the course while the excess of Christmas slowed others.

Next race Saturday 3rd January 2009 @ 9.00.....Its a busy weekend witb the club bash Saturday night and Manchester XC League on the Sunday afternoon at Woodbank Park.

Cheshire XC Championships Winsford Saturday 11th January

Its almost twelve months since the men won the Cheshire Cross Country Championships for the first time .

 

In fact the ladies had a great time too......

 

 

We have strong teams again entered and support is always welcome .

 

Each club is asked to provide a marshal for the afternoon races. If there is anyone who feels that they would like to help please do contact me .

 

The Sunday before ( 4th January) we also have round four of the Manchester XC League @  Woodbank Park.

 

If I dont see you before have a very exciting 2009 and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the bash at Alderley Edge CC Saturday 3rd , from 8.00pm .

Christmas Handicap

In a change from the rain or ice in previous years the handicap the in winter sunshine helped a record turn-out and a quality field, although the course was not entirely free from mud and one or two had navigational problems.

A deserved win by Gareth, denied a rejuvenated Roy his second win in three years with Steve Russell taking the oher podium place and Sarah Waite the first lady.

Santa delivers seasonal cheer to Park Run

Close to 170 santas , elves and fairies raced the Bramhall Park5k today ...

One fine example of the latter was am amply proportioned middle aged gent , complete with magic wand ...sir you certainly added some magic to the run !

Given all the hard work that Santas helpers put in , results and photos wont be uploaded to the parkrun site until Monday .

Mince pies provided by Nina and Sainsburys , mulled wine and other goodies enjoyed in a post race Santas social !

The winning time a healthy sub 16 on a damp undulating course .

Bramhall Parkrun: Event 35

13th December 2008

Bramhall Park was slightly less muddy than Sherdley Park but the rain came down even harder.  Despite this over 80 people just couldn't resist.  Prominent amongst these was Catriona who despite looking very relaxed finished 3rd lady.  Just in front of Cat, Ian Ashcroft remains joint second in his category after equalling his course PB - but Ian needs to find just under 3 minutes to go to the top of the VM60 table.  His gritty performance in the mud today may well have caught the eye of the XC captain.

Having just missed out on the GB team for Brussels, Steve Vernon decided that Bramhall was the obvious plan B and set out gamely to break his course record.  But even Steve couldn't escape the conditions and having skidded out of the woods on the first lap wisely slowed down and "jogged" the second lap  Bashir Hussain ran in strongly to take the V40 course record decisively out of my reach and on a better day Eleanor Baker would have challenged the course record.

REMEMBER: Saturday 20th December - Christmas Special - festive outfits, Nina's mince pies, bring some mulled wine.  Jim will attempt to become parkrun's first "sub 17 Santa".  We'll also be celebrating our 1000th different runner.

Manchester XC League Sherdley Park

The clouds were heavy , the rain was intermittent and the going while not as muddy as last year was still heavy underfoot. It was also a dry run (ouch) of the Northerns being held here in January.

With the success of recent seasons (both men and ladies teams were runners up last year ) XC has become an important part of the club calender . We are fortunate to have a strong squad and a rapidly growing team of ladies . We are also lucky to have a travelling support : Dave Read , Brian Gilliver , Nina , Claire Hawkes , Paul Sanders and Kaseys boyfriend . Great to see the men arrive early cheering on the ladies and the ladies reciprocating after their event .....and finally to watch everyone trudging the muddy path back to the car park , wet , dirty but everyone smiling .......surely thats what its all about .

The ladies carried on where they left off at BHC . Claire finished 4th and Vicky 6th . A welcome sight was seeing Sally Gilliver fit and racing with Captain Kate completing the counters . Nicky was next home with Katy Green not far behind . Katy an advocate of the mud literally threw herself at the line in a sprint but with a touch too much energy ....so graceful chest down in the *!?£ !!

Plenty of back up as Angela , Kasey and Sarah played their part in pushing back other teams counters .  

The men lost Stuart with flu in the morning and had no Bill or Ray . The vital final counters places were up for grabs.

Malcolm was as strong as ever finishing a fine fifth with the resurgent Jim in the early teens. He was pushed all the way by Rob , literally feet behind . The evergreen Tom was 21st.

Back up was needed and back up we got : Steve Dempsey gritted his teeth to come home fifth counter and Mike Cooper was our number six. Ian Smallwood and Geoff were next in as steady as ever .  

Stalwart Trevor was cheered all the way to the line as he was part of a neck and neck sprint finish ...Trevor dipped for the line and the sprint was his.

This year , the league is holding a hot pot presentationn event at 3.45 in Wythenshawe Hall , directly after the final race . A full presentation of awards will take place in comfort and with an available licenced bar. Tickets are £2.00 with Manchester City Council and the league subsidising each ticket by £5.00 : athletes and supporters will enjoy a £7.00 hot pot and bring the season to a conclusion. Lets enjoy a real Wilmslow turnout to support this new league initiative .

Bramhall parkrun 5k: Event 34

6th December 2008

It was another freezing morning in the park.  I managed to win for the first time for a while although for much of the race I was struggling to stay ahead of Stacey Ward (Basildon AC) who set a new female course record of 17:41.

This week it was Ian Smallwood's turn to suffer against diminutive opposition as both Mollie and another junior sped past him on the home straight.

Training last night

With the cold dampness and the gloom of the forecasts , it would have been easy to close the curtains and stay warm ! .......but no .....we had approx 45 training last night .

No slacking , all out effort ....well done all.

Great to see the encouragement that you give each other .

While Tuesday is a "must do" session , Thursday is a liitle more relaxed but still important . If any potential new members appear on a Thursday , please can we all ensure that we make them welcome and try to ensure that they understand that Tuesday is a "must" in terms of both personal development and also seeing the structured training that we offer .

 We dont want to miss out on talent that turns up.
